Junior Linux Developer – Level 3 Support

 

Job Description

 

SUSE Level 3 Support (L3) is a globally distributed team of highly skilled Linux developers who evaluate, analyze, and fix software defects reported by SUSE customers and partners. The L3 team within SUSE is responsible for coordinating the defect-resolution process in a wide range of SUSE Linux products. Ranging from core kernel bugs to issues in High Availability environments and various cloud solution technologies, from applications to web servers to storage solutions and everything in between that connects all these technologies together.

You consider yourself an inquisitive mind, thirsty for knowledge and always looking for ways how to grow & expand that knowledge, you understand the art of troubleshooting and like resolving different and often complex scenarios in Linux and open-source space. You will work in cross-functional teams within the broader SUSE organization on reported bugs and complex technical problems, either on your own or in close cooperation with other excellent Linux engineers.

 

Key responsibilities:

As a Junior L3 Linux developer, you are responsible for:

  • Evaluating and reproducing reported problem scenarios and code defects
  • Coordination of, and active involvement in, the bug-fixing process
  • Technical analysis of issues and bugs in Linux-based software products (both kernel and/or userspace)
  • Fixing code defects and publishing patches
  • Backporting fixes and other defects, and helping maintain legacy code streams
  • Contribute to the future development of the software infrastructure driving the daily work of the team

 

What you bring to the team:

We have been there, and we do understand as a Junior Linux Developer, you cannot have years of in-depth experience facing the most critical issues. So having the right mindset and attitude to develop yourself is equally important to us. It would be great if you can already bring some or more of the following with you while we train you further in your continuous thirst for knowledge and personal growth:

  • Friendliness and assertiveness
  • Good spoken and written knowledge of English
  • Good understanding of the Linux operating system
  • The ability to organize yourself, and work with minimal supervision
  • A pragmatic approach to handling new challenges
  • 1 year of hands-on experience of the C programming language
  • A natural curiosity in learning new components & technologies.
  • Experience with SUSE Linux, openSUSE or other Linux distributions.
  • User experience with containerization

 

Nice to have skills:

We consider it to be a big plus in your application when you already have some of the following as your skills:

  • Knowledge of other programming languages, e.g. C++, Perl, Python, Bash, …
  • Intermediate knowledge of networking
  • Intermediate knowledge of virtualization technologies
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of containerization (cgroups, namespaces, virtual networking…)
  • User experience in Cloud computing environments
  • Strong communication, analytical and organizational skills
  • General understanding of hardware architecture & concepts and their relation to the Operating System
